Raleigh, N.C. — The state’s seasonally adjusted April unemployment rate was 4.0 percent, remaining unchanged from March’s revised rate. The national rate decreased 0.2 of a percentage point to 3.6 percent.
North Carolina’s April 2019 unemployment rate remained unchanged from a year ago. The number of people employed increased 11,371 over the month to 4,837,740 and increased 56,539 over the year. The number of people unemployed increased 2,511 over the month to 202,412 and increased 694 over the year.
Seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, increased 13,200 to 4,555,200 in April. The major industries with the largest over-the-month increases were Professional & Business Services at 4,500, followed by Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 3,500; Education & Health Services, 3,300; Manufacturing, 1,400; Leisure & Hospitality Services, 1,100; Government, 500; Information, 300; and Mining & Logging, 100. Major industries experiencing decreases were Construction, 700; Financial Activities, 500; and Other Services, 300.

Since April 2018, Total Nonfarm jobs gained 69,800 with the Total Private sector growing by 70,900 and Government decreasing by 1,100. The largest over-the-year increase among major industries was Leisure & Hospitality Services, 18,700, followed by Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 16,400; Professional & Business Services, 14,900; Education & Health Services, 12,000; Financial Activities, 3,300; Construction, 2,700; Manufacturing, 2,000; Other Services, 1,000; and Information, 100. Major industries experiencing decreases were Government, 1,100; and Mining & Logging, 200.
