Saluting DWS Teammates and their RESEA Success Stories

Read three stories that illustrate the impact of workforce professionals.

Earlier this year, the Division of Workforce Solutions (DWS) held a contest to seek the best “success stories” that showcase how workforce professionals help North Carolinians who are participating in the Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) program. This program, offered through NCWorks Career Centers and in partnership with the Division of Employment Security, seeks to help people who are receiving Unemployment Insurance benefits to get back to work.

Recently, during the annual NCWorks Partnership Conference in Greensboro (and in conjunction with North Carolina’s celebration of Workforce Development Professionals Month), we recognized the impact of the outstanding staff members who placed first, second and third in this contest. The winning stories are below, with the identity of each customer remaining confidential.

Each of these DWS team members has exemplified exceptional commitment in supporting RESEA participants and elevating the program’s mission across the state. We deeply appreciate their hard work, creativity and service to their communities. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone who submitted stories!

First Place – Taniesha Hardy-Thompson

  • Based at NCWorks Career Center - Wayne County (Southeast Prosperity Zone)

In May 2025, “Customer I” faced one of the most challenging moments of her life—she became unemployed due to a domestic situation that required her to make difficult decisions for her safety and well-being. Despite these obstacles, Customer I chose resilience over despair and turned to NCWorks for support.

At her initial RESEA appointment, Customer I met Career Advisor Taniesha Hardy-Thompson, who listened with compassion and immediately went to work. Together, they updated Customer I’s resume, identified critical barriers such as childcare and personal safety, and developed a plan to help her relocate and rebuild her life. Leveraging NCWorks resources, Ms. Thompson conducted a targeted job search in a new county to ensure her customer could start fresh in a safe environment.

Although a subsequent appointment was scheduled, Customer I’s determination—and Ms. Thompson’s unwavering support—paid off sooner than expected. Customer I secured employment with a starting wage of $15 per hour, marking a significant step toward stability and independence. Customer I’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, courage and the right support system can open doors to new beginnings. Her journey proves that with perseverance and guidance, it’s possible to turn hardship into hope.

Second Place – Annette Bednosky

  • Based at NCWorks Career Center – Ashe County (Northwest Prosperity Zone)

After dedicating 42 years to the same employer, “Customer MN” faced a challenge that would intimidate anyone—re-entering the job market for the first time in decades. But instead of letting fear hold her back, she chose courage. In December 2025, she walked into the NCWorks Career Center – Wilkes County ready for a fresh start.

With Career Advisor Annette Bednosky’s guidance, Customer MN transformed her decades of experience into a modern, powerful resume that highlighted her leadership and shipping expertise—skills that employers value today. Annette also built a personalized re-employment plan and connected her with local opportunities tailored to her goals, including two promising leads just minutes from home.

Customer MN embraced the process with determination. And her effort paid off—just 10 days after her initial RESEA appointment, she accepted a new job. This flexible, customer-facing role not only provided income but restored her confidence, introduced new skills, and set her on the path toward her ultimate goal: returning to a supervisory position.

Her story is proof that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. With adaptability and the right support, any chapter can become the beginning of something extraordinary. Success doesn’t have an age limit—it belongs to those who keep moving forward.

Third Place – Monique Woods

  • Based at NCWorks Career Center – Hoke County (Sandhills Prosperity Zone)

When “Customer UV,” a disabled U.S. military veteran with back challenges, visited the NCWorks Career Center in Hoke County on March 18, 2025, he was ready to start a new chapter after years in management. Customer UV uploaded his resume and received additional guidance from Career Advisor Monique Woods and Veterans representative Gary Jacobs, who connected him to job referrals, workshops and career fairs—including events on Fort Bragg.

Customer UV embraced every resource available. He attended multiple workshops, including sessions led by Career Advisor Shanka Baldwin, which he found so valuable that he participated twice. These workshops boosted his confidence and helped him network effectively at job fairs. Customer UV’s barrier—finding work that didn’t require heavy physical exertion—was softened by targeting roles that matched his skills and abilities.

On May 5, 2025, Customer UV achieved his goal: he was hired by a new employer as a Yard/Dryer Operator Lead. Alongside his new job, Customer UV continues working toward an Associate Degree in Public Administration with VA educational support, proving his commitment to growth and stability.

Customer UV’s story is a powerful example of resilience and resourcefulness. With determination and the right support, he turned challenges into opportunities and built a path toward a brighter future.
