North Carolina releases a list of Top 300 Private Employers, compiled annually, based off the first quarter employment size as reported by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wage (QCEW) program. The list breaks out employment by Manufacturing and Nonmanufacturing employment.

In the first quarter of 2019 the list comprised 62 manufacturing employers, approximately 21 percent, while nonmanufacturing employers completed the list with remaining 238 employers. This is a slight increase of manufacturing employers, 1 percent, over last year.

Since 2013 Wal-Mart has been the number one employer and Duke University and Food Lion competing for second place.
