North Carolina releases a list of Top 300 Private Employers, compiled annually, based off the first quarter employment size as reported by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wage (QCEW) program. The list breaks out employers by manufacturing and nonmanufacturing.

In the first quarter of 2017 the list is comprised of 63 manufacturing employers, approximately 21 percent, while nonmanufacturing employers filled the remaining 261 spots. This is consistent with the previous year’s data.

Since 2013 Wal-Mart has been the largest employer in the state while Duke University and Food Lion have competed for second place. The table below shows the top five employers as reported between 2013 and 2017.
