Consumers in 140 towns in 78 North Carolina counties took advantage of the first phase of the North Carolina ENERGY STAR Appliance Replacement and Rebate program April 22-25. Those customers bought more than 54,400 energy efficient refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and clothes washing machines worth an estimated $46.4 million in sales.
North Carolina received $8.8 million through the federal Recovery Act to participate in the Energy Star Appliance Replacement and Rebate program. About $7 million or 87 percent of the money was spent during the four-day program, which offered instant 15 percent rebates on qualified appliances. The program was offered by the N.C. Energy Office through the U.S. Department of Energy.
