Scott Safety Expansion Will Create 67 New Jobs in Union County

Raleigh
Feb 27, 2015
, N.C. - Governor Pat McCrory, N.C. Commerce Secretary John E. Skvarla III and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. announced today that Scott Technologies, Inc. will be investing in growth of its Scott Safety headquarters in Union County, NC.  The company plans to invest $28.7 million in Monroe over the next five years, supporting 67 new jobs at the location.

“Scott Safety makes products that keep our firefighters and law enforcement personnel safe,” said Governor McCrory.  “This headquarters expansion will allow the manufacturer to continue its good work while enhancing the long-term competitiveness of the North Carolina facility.”

Scott Safety, a Tyco business, is headquartered in Monroe and is a premier manufacturer of innovative respiratory and personal protective equipment and safety devices for firefighters, industrial workers, police squads, militaries, homeland security forces, and rescue teams around the world.

The company has seven global manufacturing locations. The Scott product line includes self-contained breathing apparatus, supplied air and air-purifying respirators, personal protective equipment, gas detection instruments, and thermal imaging cameras. Scott Safety employs more than 1,100 people worldwide, including 515 in Monroe, and has operations around the globe.

“North Carolina-based companies that have an international footprint like Scott Safety are an important part of our state’s economic engine,” said Secretary Skvarla.  “We are always delighted when companies recognize the great advantages of North Carolina and choose to expand here rather than selecting one of their many other options around the world.”

The expansion includes updates to the existing infrastructure as well as new machinery. Salaries will vary by job but will include manufacturing, engineering and sales, with an average annual payroll of nearly $4.4 million.

“Scott Safety has a long history in North Carolina and over that time we have enjoyed amazing support from the community around us,” said Andrew Chrostowski, president, Scott Safety. “As we continue to grow and expand our capabilities over the coming years this investment will assist us in positioning ourselves as a global safety leader.”

The project was made possible in part by a performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund of up to $150,000. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for the reimbursement.  The One NC Fund also requires and is contingent upon local matches.

“It is always great to hear about new jobs coming to our region,” said Senator Tommy Tucker. “These new jobs will be a welcome addition to our economy here in Union County.”

“It is good to see the investment Scott Safety has made to expand in Union County,” said Representative Mark Brody. “We work hard in the General Assembly to help bring this kind of investment to our communities, and this reinforces what I’ve always believed — good public policy brings real benefits to the people and communities we serve.”

"With its decision to expand, Scott Safety is providing Union County, regional workers, and our local economy an exciting new opportunity for growth,” said Representative Dean Arp.  “I am encouraged by this good news, and look forward to job creation and investment in the area that I am proud to call home.”

"I am very excited to learn about the planned expansion by Scott Safety in Union County and appreciative of its confidence in Union County and North Carolina," said Representative Craig Horn. "Its commitment to growth and investment in the future reflect well on our community and our workforce."

In addition to the N.C. Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C., other partners that helped with this project include: North Carolina Community College System, NCWorks, Monroe-Union County Economic Development, the city of Monroe and Union County.
