North Carolina's September Employment Figures Released

IGH — The state's seasonally adjusted September unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, increasing 0.1 of a percentage point from August's revised rate. The national rate increased 0.1 of a percentage point to 5.0 percent.

North Carolina's September 2016 unemployment rate was 1.0 percentage points lower than a year ago.  The number of people employed increased 7,559 over the month to 4,596,364 and increased 98,277 over the year. The number of people unemployed increased 5,671 over the month to 227,377, and decreased 42,158 over the year.

Seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, increased 9,700 to 4,337,300 in September. The major industries with the largest over-the-month increases were Construction at 3,300, followed by Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 3,100; Professional & Business Services, 2,700; Other Services, 2,500; Financial Activities, 1,600; and Government, 1,500. Major industries experiencing decreases were Leisure & Hospitality Services, 3,300; Manufacturing, 900; Education & Health Services, 700; and Information, 100. Mining & Logging employment remained unchanged over the month.

Since September 2015, Total Nonfarm jobs gained 82,600 with the Total Private sector growing by 75,800 and Government increasing by 6,800. The largest over-the-year increase among major industries was Professional & Business Services at 26,800, followed by Trade, Transportation & Utilities, 21,900; Education & Health Services, 10,400; Construction, 9,100; Other Services, 7,100; Government, 6,800; and Leisure & Hospitality Services, 5,200. Major industries experiencing decreases were Financial Activities, 1,900; Information, 1,500; and Manufacturing, 1,300. Mining & Logging employment remained unchanged over the year.

The next unemployment update is scheduled for Wednesday, November 2, 2016 when the county unemployment rates for September 2016 will be released.
