Gov. Perdue Announces 63 Students Selected for Summer Internship with State Agencies Program is Coordinated by Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office

RALEIGH
May 20, 2011

Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that 63 North Carolina college, graduate and law students have been selected for summer internships with state agencies. Now in its 41st year, the N.C. State Government Internship Program is coordinated by the Youth Advocacy and Involvement Office in the Department of Administration.

“This program brings three great benefits to North Carolina,” Gov. Perdue said. “It gives our best and brightest students invaluable real-world experience in public service; it gives our state employees a helping hand during the summer vacation months, when state departments often need help the most; and it provides North Carolina citizens with extra services and important work throughout the summer.”

Internships will begin on Monday and provide students real-world experience in a wide range of state government workplaces, creating opportunities for students to work in their chosen field and to consider careers in public service.

“I was very happy not to be running copies and making coffee,” said one intern last year. “I was given challenging, meaningful responsibilities throughout my time here. I gained a whole new perspective on the interplay between politics and economic development that I could not get in the classroom…. This internship was the perfect fit.”

In addition to traditional internship opportunities, this program filled new intern positions to match growing career opportunities for North Carolina students (note asterisk before student name). Administered by the State Energy Office of the N.C. Department of Commerce, the N.C. Student Energy and Fellowship Program is focused on green, energy-efficient technology and energy conservation for North Carolina.

Interns working on Energy Internship projects will be paid $10 per hour, as required by the Student Energy Internship and Fellowship Program, and will work 11 weeks in the summer. Other interns will be paid $8.25 an hour and will work 10 weeks.

More than 3,000 students have participated since the program was established in 1969.
